 Junior Programs


JUNIOR PROGRAM GROUPS DESCRIPTION

 

Junior program consists of the following groups:

If your child needs to be evaluated to make sure he/she is in a correct group, please contact tennis director Michal Zaluski at mzaluski-chtc@nc.rr.com or 919-929-5248x104. The evaluation takes 30 minutes for a cost of $26. In case of rain or inclement weather all participants pay $3 extra for indoor courts.

The players need to graduate from each group to get to the next group. Below is the description of each group.  Please make sure you register your child online for the class you will be attending at Junior Clinics. It will help us with ideal coach to child ratio.

  1. Quickstart I
    • Description: An exciting program created by the USTA to get smaller children playing tennis.  Utilizing specialized equipment, all tailored to age and size, it is fun, fast way to learn the game.
    • Ages of children: 5-8
    • Dates and times of practice: Wednesday 3:30PM-4:30PM
    • Focus on skills: fundamentals of strokes; groundstrokes, volleys, overheads and serves.
    • Goal: developing fundamentals of basic strokes and being able to maintain short rallies from short court (service line to service line)
    • Cost: Members $12, Non-members $17 per class

     

  1. Quickstart II
    • Description: This program is for the children who have been introduced to the game of tennis and know some fundamentals, such as basic technique for groundstrokes and volleys.  Furthermore, the children can rally the ball 3 or more times over the net on the short court (service line to service line). This program focuses on giving the children solid base that will be further developed in the later stages. It will prepare them for starting to play tournaments.
    • Ages of children: beginners 5-8
    • Dates and times of practice: Saturday 9:00 AM-10:00 AM
    • Focus on skills: further developing fundamentals of tennis, such as hand eye coordination, technique, basic tactic, movement and scoring
    • Goal: longer rallies, consistent serve from short court (service line to service line), developing better understanding of all strokes, technique, movement and tactics
    • Cost: Members $12 Non-members $17 per class
  1. Slammers
    • Description: This program is designed for beginner to intermediate level of players who can maintain a rally from the service line but are inconsistent from the baseline.
    • Ages of children: 8-12
    • Dates and times of practice: Thursday 4:00PM-5:00PM
    • Focus on skills: fundamental strokes, movement and etiquette on a bigger court, preparation for point play.
    • Goal: being able to maintain shorter rally from the base line.
    • Tests: skill tests
    • Cost: Members $12, Non-members $17 per class

     

  1. Smashers
    • Description: This program is designed for intermediate to advanced level players who has begun to rally from the baseline with control and has limited USTA tournament experience.
    • Ages of children: 8-14
    • Dates and times of practice: Tuesday and Thursday 4:00PM-5:30PM
    • Focus on skills: specific grips, further developing all strokes (groundstrokes , volleys, overhead and serve) from the baseline, developing spins, fitness and etiquette.
    • Goal: being able to maintain longer rallies from the base line, analyze the strengths and weaknesses of an opponent, and prepare for playing tournaments or school team matches.
    • Tests: skill tests
    • Cost: Members $18, Non-members $23 per class

Intermediate Program has the same description as smashers.  It is offered on Saturday at 1:00PM-2:30PM.

  1. Tournament tough
    • Description: This program is for players who are playing tournaments, want to be pushed and are looking for competitive environment.  The players in this group are advanced and can demonstrate variety of shots (top spin, slice, etc), place groundstrokes and volleys in specific areas, can transition to the net play, use variety and placement of serves and overheads.
    • Ages of children: 11-18
    • Dates and times of practice: Monday and Wednesday 4:30PM-6:30PM
    • Focus on skills: Different strategies and how to play a match, mental toughness, conditioning, effectiveness of shots and sportsmanship and etiquette on court
    • Goal: To prepare the players for high school or college team
    • Tests: At the beginning of each month.

·        Each student will hit all strokes 10 times to a specific area on the court

·        They will score a number out of 80

·        This score is recorded and can be improved upon each month

·        The score is one of our tools that we can use to group kids together

    • Cost: Members $24, Non-members $29 per class

Advanced Practice

    • Description: This program is designed for tournament level players who like to be challenged and like competitive environment.  It focuses on the match play and point play in different situations.  There are only 16 spots available. Need to sign up online for the program.
    • Ages of children: 12-18
    • Dates and times of practice: Saturday, 11:30AM-1:00PM
    • Focus on skills: being able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of an opponent, analyzing and strategizing the game.
    • Goal: to get match strong
    • Cost: Members $18, Non-members $23 per class

Sunday, April 4th, 1:00PM CHTC Members and Junior Day, UNC Men's Tennis Team vs. Virginia Tech. We will meet at the Friday Center to support the UNC Men's tennis team.

Friday-Sunday, May 14th-May 16th, USTA-CHTC Junior Tennis Championships

Sunday, May 30th, Beat the Pro Day for Juniors

Monday, June 14th, Tennis Camps/Advanced Tennis Camps begin

Saturday, July 10th, Junior Summer Tennis Carnival

Sunday, August 22nd, Junior Ladder Kick-Off Social

Sunday, October 17th, Junior Fall Tennis Carnival

October TBA, 2nd Annual Pro-Am Event with the UNC Men's and Women's Tennis Teams

Saturday, December 18th, Junior Holiday Tennis Party
