Club History
Established in 1967, the Chapel Hill Tennis Club (CHTC) is a non-profit, member-owned organization with a rich history as a leading tennis and social club. The founding of Chapel Hill Tennis Club brought the community together as tennis was growing in popularity.
A Tennis Town
Chapel Hill has long been considered a tennis town. Henry Clark, one of the founders of Chapel Hill Tennis Club, discovered that Chapel Hill was noted as the first town to have the game of tennis in North Carolina.
The Founding of the Club
Mac McGinty was the central figure in Chapel Hill organized tennis, and was the heart and soul of the Chapel Hill Tennis Association. The Chapel Hill Tennis Association was formed to promote tennis in the Chapel Hill area.
In the 1960's, there was broad interest among the entire tennis community to build a larger place to play. The Chapel Hill Tennis Association decided to create a family recreation club for tennis and swimming.
1987 Tennis Club of the Year
Over the decades in the life of Chapel Hill Tennis Club, there have been thousands of members and significant growth in the size and reach of our programs. For a while, the most successful aspect of our club had been our Junior programs in tennis and swimming, and these programs have continued to be strong to this day.
The excellence of our club was recognized in 1987 by the North Carolina Tennis Foundation as the North Carolina "Tennis Club of the Year."
